COMPARISION BETWEEN ISO 9001 & ISO 14001

Let us first understand the basics of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and the comparison between these two standards.

ISO 9001 is a “certified” Quality Management system that aims to increase the service quality and deliver the quality products offered and to continue monitoring in order to meet market-relevant standards and regulatory requirements. It includes requirements/specifications through a massive number of procedures and policies, including documenting revisions, FIFO(First-In, First-Out), testing, test equipment control, and defect analysis to ensure customers get consistent, good quality products. Each company must have a mission statement that clearly discusses the three C’s (customer satisfaction, compliance, and continual improvement).

ISO 14001 is a “certified” Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and aids certification as well to follow a systematic approach to measure and improve their environmental impact. ISO 14001 has been recognized across 164 countries that aim to strategize and provide the best standards and practices and it is designed for any type of organization, regardless of its size/sector or its nature of business.

Similarities -

ISO certifications eventually help with the maintenance and expansion growth of the customer base and also increases the financial performance of the firm. For example, ISO 14001 cost in Bahrain is very affordable and comes with several benefits which concern the Environmental Management System(EMS). 1.Both are management related standards which belong to the ISO family.

2.Both the standards allow for certification (which is being advantageous in marketing)

3.Both have got numerous requirements that are similar or identical.

4.Both affect the entire organization, including staff and operational processes.

5.Both of them have a similar Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) structure and hold many other similarities but they don’t align directly if we carefully examine their sections, we can understand them better.

6.Both take the project approach and aim at the overall improvement of the organization.

Differences -

An organization can pursue both the ISO standards and get certified in both of them. For example, Jordan has an overall literacy rate of 99.22% which is enormous, therefore the people in Jordan, opt for ISO 9001 Certification in Jordan to demonstrate the ability to provide products/services that meet customer requirements.

If we go into an in-depth analysis, there are many differences. We will not go into each one of them but some important points are given below so that you get a basic idea about it.

  1. ISO 9001 - Quality Management System (QMS) to maintain a systematic approach for various business processes and for providing amazing quality.
  2. ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System (EMS) enabling organizations to follow a systematic approach to measure and improve their overall environmental impact.
  3. No ‘normative references’ (that are supporting standards) defined in ISO 14001.
  4. ISO 9001 requires a Quality Manual whereas ISO 14001 does not.
  5. ISO 9001 requires several documented procedures but ISO 14001 requires only a single documented procedure (i.e. environmental aspects control).
  6. ISO 9001 requires overall 21 records while ISO 14001 requires a maximum of 7 records.
  7. While ISO 9001 focuses on aspects mainly on Quality and Customer satisfaction, ISO 14001 has the main intention of pollution prevention and minimizing harmful environmental impacts.

These are just a few of the differences but there are plenty more (both differences and similarities) if we dive deep into it (especially into the theoretical clauses and its aspects).
